Katrina has shaped most everything since the hurricane struck the Biloxi waterfront. The storm surge was 24' high at Beauvoir. The water was up over the 20' high porch and flooded the main floor of the house. Most treasures were destroyed or broken badly. This is just one location. The huge surge pummeled the entire coast here. The damage was horrific.
Most pictures are of the restored house and outbuildings and the grounds not torn up by the hurricane. The last picture is of the main house immediately after Katrina hit.
This area remains a city that is damaged striped of it old charm and trying to find a new identity. It's things and its spirit have been gravely hurt.
The main things this town has today are miles of empty beaches and way too many casinos. Who uses these places we did not see on our visit. This whole area was pretty empty. Wrong season or just slow to recover maybe. Unemployment here today is 9.7%.
The locals were all very southern cordial. But we couldn't figure out what there is to do here beyond sitting in the sun or gambling. We probably would't visit again.
